The Missing Link

The youngest of 3 brothers, Matt Cavender was born in 1981. 12 years younger than his brothers Brian and Doug (Seafoam and Ilk) Matt was privy to a music experience that many dont get in life. Early experimentation with electronics and musical gear was a fascination for young Matt as he stumbled around as a 10 year old with size 13 shoes. His posture and demeanor as a young lad garnered him the nickname The Missing Link

As a kid The Link was listening to forward thinking electronic acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Tackhead, Al Jourgensons bands, Front Line Assembly, Nitzer Ebb, Kraftwerk and others in the industrial genre of the time. It was 1991 when The Shamen released an ep entitled Move any Mountain and a year later The Prodigy released The Experience It was all over after that. Ilk bought a Korg MonoPoly and let The Link borrow it. In his own words Like a vacuum that thing sucked me in like pocket lint.

The next few years were all about analog, messing around with studio gear with his brothers and doing all he could to get more equipment. Setting loops, arpeggiations, and weird sounds were the obsession and timeless hours were spent in the studio on Larimer Street in Denver. In 1997 The Link got a copy of Cubase 3.5 and the big jump to MIDI was on.

Over the next few years The Link was hanging out with the older Denver music heads geeking out in the studios, helping lug gear, throwing full moon parties, slinging flyers and keeping in the loop as best he could without a 21+ ID. (Somehow this gangly creature was checking IDs at the legendary Boulder club Soma when he was only 19) The scene was alive and well in Denver and Boulder and there was always a lot to do and a lot to hear. Many DJs and producers from Colorado were gaining exposure independently and in 2000 The Missing Link was an integral part in the formation of the Denver collective milehighhouse productions.

In 2001 The Link had enough material for a rough glitchy techy breaky album that was put into an unreleased demo entitled Enter the Brow. The Link and his brother Ilk went on a mini CA tour to showcase their skeelz with a rough live PA. The bug was set, and The Link wanted more of the live on stage experience.

In the ensuing years The Link has kept his nose to the grindstone honing his craft and sounds. Deciding early on that samples were for pussies, The Link worked diligently creating his own sounds and equipment to produce them. After countless hours and time helping build the Colorado scene and sound The Missing Link has his first track released on the milehighhouse recordings compilation entitled Out Of Thin Air, Volume 1 With critical acclaim and a limited release The Links sound was delivered on vinyl to the world. In late 2003 The Missing Links 2nd track was released on milehighhouse recordings (mhhr002) a remix of Denver band Tristraums track, Shiver. A sick twisted nu skool breaks monster.

In late 2004 the Missing Link caught a break. Releasing the first ep for Totem Music Vancouvers new label Wagon Repair Totem has presold the limited issue of 1000 copies. This ep has launched The Missing Link into the Leftfield and Techno stratosphere. The future holds big things for Matt. Keep your eyes open for a tour in 2005 and for future releases on milehighhouse and Wagon Repair and Depth Recordings.
